Floral Haven is known throughout Mid America as having the largest private display of Veterans Flags over the Memorial Day Weekend.
Memorial Day weekend has always been a very important time at Floral Haven. The Avenue of Flags began in 1972, when a widow brought in her husband's government issued flag and asked that Floral Haven fly it over the Memorial Day weekend. There are now almost 3000 Veterans Flags that have been donated by veterans' families that grace our grounds for this event. If you are interested in donating your loved one's flag to fly in the Avenue of Flags, please contact our office.
Memorial Day weekend begins on the Friday morning before Memorial Day, when members of the Junior ROTC assist in raising these donated flags in alphabetical order throughout the cemetery. Many years a special program is planned for Saturday. Past programs have included a display of the moving version of the Vietnam Wall, a Salute to Women in Military Service, ceremonies honoring the soldiers of the Korean Conflict and the Pearl Harbor survivors, to name but a few. During the weekend, members of the Civil Air Patrol reenact the Changing of the Guard at a replica of the Tomb of the Unknowns. The Boy Scouts of America have taken on the task of lowering and folding each flag on Monday evening to conclude the Memorial Day observance. More than one thousand scouts participate in this special program.
