Mary Yarnell was magnificent! She and Joe were two of the kindest, most joyful people I've ever met. I have so much love for them both.
Mary and my mom, Naomi, became dear friends working together at SEG. It was such a beautiful friendship, it included both of our families.
When I was a young journalist trying to get my career started, Mary and Joe were so generous to let me live with them in their Grand Lake home. They made me feel like I was part of the family, and were always so supportive and encouraging.
Of course, Mary was always cooking or baking something delicious while she and Joe were telling fun stories. I remember once standing in the kitchen with her, as she was stirring her pinto beans, when she looked up at me with her bright, twinkling eyes and asked me if I knew the "secret" to the perfect pot of beans. "It's not the salt," she said with a smile. "If you really want them to be nice and tender... add a little sugar!" Then she winked at me and nodded her head with conviction.
Another time, Joe got really tickled with us because he noticed we were both standing in the kitchen in the "stork" formation (one foot planted in the opposite knee) just chatting away. We got to the point where we were all in tears, laughing at the fact that pretty much every woman we know stands that way... especially when we're busy talkin'.
It's been a few decades since then, but I've been fortunate to stay in touch through their close relationship with Mom and Dad all these years. I'll always cherish our time together.
With love and gratitude,
