POWELL Dr. Gerald Jerry King, 75, passed peacefully to enter the final stage of his spiritual journey on Sunday, Feb. 15th, 2009. Jerry was born to Brewer and Nannie Powell in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 23, 1933. He graduated from Will Rogers H.S. in 1950. He served in the US Air Force Bands, playing clarinet and saxophone from 1950 to 1970, traveled the world and then retired to his home in Tulsa, OK, where he remained a member of Air Force Musicians Association. Embarking on a new career in education, he received his Bachelors from NE OSU, his Masters from OSU and Doctorate from TU. He enjoyed teaching his students at Union H.S. for 20 years and was a long time supporter of Union sports, drove a school bus and worked as a security guard. During these years, he was the Union H.S. Key Club advisor and dedicated to Kiwanis. His love of music never ceased! He played in the Tulsa Community Band and Sounds of Music Big Band of Tulsa. Jerry was president of the Woodland View Park I POA. He loved traveling, history, politics, fellowship and calling his grandchildren, George. Jerry was a long time member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Tulsa, served on the finance committee and taught Sunday school on a regular basis. Preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Evelyn Garlock and Dorlene Crawford and Brothers: Donald and Teddy all of Tulsa. Jerry wanted to thank his Second Family of DaVita for all their care and support for the past 3 years. Memorial contributions can be made to the Kiwanis Club of SE Tulsa or St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Viewing will be held Tues. 5-8:30PM and Wed. 9:00 AM-8:30PM at Floral Haven Funeral Home. Services will be 2:00 PM, Thurs., Feb. 19 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church at HWY 169 & Admiral, Tulsa.Survived By: He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Jean (Niklaus); four daughters, Julie Potter, Vicki Galama and Marci Powell all of Tulsa; and Connie Gray of Lithia, Florida; two sons-in-law, Charlie Potter and Robert Galama; niece Nancy Crawford and nephew David Garlock of Tulsa. Jerry has seven grandchildren; Tara Brook Watkins of Quincy, MA, Chad Watkins, Cody Potter, Laura Galama and Shelby Potter of Tulsa and Julian and Sydney Gray of Lithia, FL.Â .
