Obituary for Alice “Ginnie” Virginia Hicks Alice Virginia “Ginnie” Hicks, age 86, passed away at her home at Terrace Lake Village on June 30. Her services are arranged with Carr Chapel in the Pines for visitation Thurs, July 3, 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. with memorial service Fri., July 4, 11:00 a.m. also at Carr. Rev. Brandon Love, associate pastor for the Church at Lake Guntersville, officiating.A graveside service and burial adjacent to her late husband, Leon R. Hicks, Sr., with grandson Rev. Travis K.K. Hicks officiating, will be next week in Tulsa, Oklahoma.Mrs. Hicks moved to Guntersville in 2009 from Billings, Missouri and made many friends among her Terrace Lake neighbors. She enjoyed their on-site Bible studies, bingo and card games. She also loved her new church family at the Church at Lake Guntersville.Born in Argyle, Wisconsin Oct. 1, 1927, Mrs. Hicks married a Navy man in Milwaukee in 1946, moved to rural Oklahoma and was a farmer’s wife who was frequently found working the farm, milking the cows, raising pigs and driving the tractor while rearing three children. After moving to Tulsa and then Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, over the years she worked as a banker, insurance agent and in accounting.Widowed in 1989, she took up the violin in her sixties and enjoyed playing the piano. She was also a licensed cosmetologist who became a published poet. Mrs. Hicks developed a ministry of her own by sending cards, scripture verses and personal words of encouragement regularly to many people. It was not unusual for her to mail as many as 50 cards every week.Described by her friends and family as “feisty and independent,” ailments in her advancing years slowed down her body but not her keen mind. She was a patriot and vocal supporter of the military, and also known for generous support of numerous charities. Her conversations were sprinkled with humor and stories, one of which was bragging about having visited Hawaii 27 times. She had two sons who lived in Hawaii and made the most of that connection.Her husband, Leon R. Hicks, Sr. passed away in 1989. She is survived by 3 children; Leon R. Hicks, Jr. (Brenda), Guntersville, daughter Lesalie (Richard) Stengell, Owensboro, Kentucky, and Robert C. Hicks (Arlene), Honolulu, Hawaii; 8 grandchildren, Robert Kalani Hicks (Mary) and Tracy Hicks, Honolulu, Travis Hicks, St. Joseph, Missouri, Heather (Darold) Henderson and Kari (Robert) Hicks, Springfield, Missouri, Kristen (Henry) Potter, Owensboro, Kentucky, Samantha Herrera (Rene), San Diego, California, and Zachary (Abby) Hicks, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Sue (Ron) Thompson, Harshaw, Wisconsin, and brothers Timothy Allen, Watertown, Wisconsin, John Allen, Australia, Steven Allen, Las Vegas and Daniel Allen, Sioux Falls, Iowa. Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by sisters Harriet, Joanne, Lucille and brother Cyrus Allen.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to Christian Women’s Job Corps, 5025 Spring Creek Dr., Guntersville, AL 35976 or to the Church at Lake Guntersville Building Fund, 4525 Wyeth Dr, Guntersville, AL 35976.
