Alice Stevens' Obituary
Alice Virginia Bruner-Stevens, age 94, of Tulsa, passed away on April 20, 2019. She was born on July 19, 1924 in Holdenville, Oklahoma at the family home to David and Ida Bruner. She and her father, David, resided with his sister Minda Bruner-Stilwell-Wilson of Holdenville until his death in 1933. At age 9, paternal uncle Ed Bruner and his wife Denie, of Exeter, California, took Alice into their family. Alice was the youngest of 5 biological siblings, Tony Bruner, Dixon Bruner, George Bruner, Lucinda Bruner –Johnson and Mattie Lou Bruner-Factor. Her second set of siblings were: Alvis Bruner, Bernice Bruner-Hensley, Audrey Lee Bruner, Della Mae Bruner-Easily, Eddie Bruner Jr., Nona Jean Bruner-Cornett, Bobby Ray Bruner, Eugene Bruner and Yvonne Bruner-Craig.Alice loved to travel and most likely this was rooted during her school years, as she resided in California and attended Indian Boarding Schools. She possessed a great sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest. She was very proud to have ridden an elephant in Thailand, a camel in Israel and walked the Great Wall of China. She had fond memories of both Eufaula and Haskell Indian Schools. In May 1944, she was crowned Campus Queen at Haskell Institute. After moving back to Oklahoma after her schooling in the ‘40s she worked at the Mayo Hotel where she met many people who became important in Tulsa History. One of which was Thomas Gilcrease. Her one regret was that she did not accept his offer to work for him. She also worked at the Zebco (fishing rod) factory and in her seniors years she was employed by Sam’s Club. Alice made many friends when playing bingo and enjoyed outings to the Cherokee Nation Hard Rock Casino.Alice was the oldest living member of the Bruner family until her passing. She remained active in life until late in her senior years. Alice is preceded in death by her parents, a son, 3 grandchildren, 5 siblings and survived by her daughter, Betty “Susie” King, of Gallup, New Mexico, 1 grandson, 5 granddaughters, 13 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson and her pet dachshund, Molly. A funeral service to celebrate Alice’s life will be at 2 PM, Tuesday, April 23, 2019.
