Alma Jewell Barnes' Obituary
Alma Jewell (Hardcastle) Barnes was born August 28, 1922, near Stigler, Oklahoma to R.L. and Martha Kirk Hardcastle. She attended Stigler Schools except for 6-8th grade she attended Rocky Ridge, Havana Country Schools. Alma graduated with honors, class of 1940 from Stigler High School. She maintained strong ties with classmates and friends throughout the years.
She married Olen Barnes on March 11, 1942. They moved to Tulsa in 1947. Alma was loyal to God, her Country, her family, and her friends. She was a longtime active member of Nogales Ave. Baptist Church. Being a supreme American Patriot, she supported the “Good Old USA” in her conservative manner, yet was so liberal, she sacrificed herself to meet the needs of others.
She retired from Sooner Federal Savings and Loans as Purchasing Coordinates after twenty-five years of faithful service. Alma was a longtime member of the Oklahoma Federation of Writers and Tulsa Night Writers as an accomplished writer, her awards both monetary and honorary were numerous. Several of her works included short stories and poems that were published. She enjoyed “Seniors Word” at South Minister Presbyterian Church. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that her legacy of love and devotion lives on in the lives of those she loved so deeply.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. Hardcastle and Martha Kirk Hardcastle; her husband, Olen C. Barnes; her son, Jerry Barnes; her siblings, Ola Hardcastle, Mamie Patterson, Opal Hoopson, Helen Stephenson, Stoney Hardcastle, Ralph Hardcastle, Buddy Hardcastle, Raymond Hardcastle; and her daughter-in-law Elayne Barnes.
She is survived by her son, Jimmy Barnes, her grandchildren, Brian and Jeff Neel; great-granddaughter Riley Neel, and numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.
Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Monday, June 5, 2023, at Floral Haven Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 pm, Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at Nogales Ave. Baptist Church in Tulsa.
