Archie Conner Remington's Obituary
Archie Conner Remington was born September 21, 1925, at Chelsea, Oklahoma. He departed this life July 29, 2020, at his home in rural Foyil, OK.
His parents were Press Remington and Vada (known as Vadie) Conner Remington. His father was a woodsman and owned several lumber mills, employing family members and his sons, Harvey and Archie. Archie was good with numbers and at an early age did the bookkeeping for the family business. Because of this background after military service Archie worked for two large lumber companies as a successful salesman.
The family moved many times to areas of available lumber resulting in Archie attending various elementary and middle level schools. He graduated from Catoosa High School, class of 1943, class number 15 at the age of 17.
After graduation, Archie enrolled in Ham Radio School located in Sapulpa. World War II was being fought both in Europe and the Pacific and the war effort resulted in the Ham Radio School being closed. It wasn’t long until Archie decided he would join the Marines. He left for boot camp at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, CA, and arrived there being assigned as ham radio operator. He had his 18th birthday at boot camp. It wasn’t long until he was on board a ship for the Pacific battles. He spent 30 days, every day, along the side of ship very sea sick. He was headed for some of the worst battles fought on the Islands of Peleliu, Paiau Islands and Okinawa. Archie was honorably discharged February, 1946. He was proud to have served his country and he continued to support it. Archie fought in a terrible war and was one of the fortunate ones to come home.
Archie spent the next few years working for his father in the lumber business.
In 1949, Archie was living in Oklahoma City and while attending Capitol Hill Assembly of God accepted the Lord as Savior and was baptized.
In 1952, living in Tulsa, Archie’s cousin Wanda Snook, introduced Archie to her coworker, Neva Riddle on a blind date. After dating a few months, they were married April 3, 1953, and spent the next 67 years happily married. Archie was a devoted husband, and Neva couldn’t have been luckier (those are her words). Together they built their home known as Weeping Hills and raised cattle when they were younger.
During the next many years, Archie worked for Pryor LPG delivering gas to customers throughout Rogers and Mayes Counties. In addition, he worked for Neece Steel.
Both Archie and Neva found a calling when the Foyil Fire Department needed leadership. Archie served the Fire Department Board, volunteer fireman ready at any time of day or night, and as a trainer. He was a certified rescuer and even wrote the manual for trainees. Alongside him was Neva both serving with loyalty and dedication.
It was difficult to take retirement. Archie was always hardworking and ready to help his neighbors. He loved family and family loved him.
He is survived by Neva, his wife, many nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces, cousins, as well as sister-in-law Uneeda Newton and husband Joe, many friends and neighbors.
He is predeceased in death by his parents, Press and Vadie Remington, brother, Harvey and sister, Velma Remington Tiger.
Funeral Service will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service.
In lieu of flowers donations to The Wounded Warrior foundation have been requested by the family.
