Arthur Monroe Gibson III's Obituary
Arthur Monroe Gibson III (1941-2025)
Passed away at the age of 83 on August 24th, 2025, surrounded by love and family.
Born on November 7th, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, to Arthur Gibson II and Hedwig Okoniewski. He was married to his beloved wife Cynthia Gibson (Banish) for over forty years. Together, they built a life filled with love and lasting memories.
Art served honorably as a rifleman in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963. He specialized in communications and graduated from radio and telegraph school as an honor student. During his service, he received two medals for sharpshooting and a good conduct medal. The values instilled in him by the Corps—duty, honor, and integrity—remained a guiding force throughout his life.
Art lived a life full of adventure and inspiration. Teaching was at the heart of who he was-whether it was English in the classroom, lessons behind the wheel, or simply guiding others through life as a mentor and coach. No matter the setting, he approached teaching as a true calling, driven by deep passion and purpose.
The rhythm of his life was shaped by the call of the sea-beneath the waves in scuba gear, the sound of strings beneath his fingers, the freedom in the miles he biked, or writing stories to share a piece of himself that will live on through his words.
Above all, the laughter and love of family brought him his greatest joy.
As a father, Art gave unwavering love and guidance. As a grandpa, he taught just as much- sharing his wisdom with patience, humor, and joy, creating memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. To his friends, he was loyal and kindhearted. His presence made life richer for everyone blessed to know him.
We are forever grateful for the lessons Art instilled in us- lessons that will continue to guide our lives. He showed us how to live boldly and without fear, to never stop learning, and to give our very best in all we do. Through his example, we are reminded of the importance of strong morals, faith in God, the unshakeable bond of family, and the value of meeting life with both determination and heart.
Our hearts ache for more time, yet we are grateful for the time we had and for the lessons that will continue to guide our lives.
We don't just say goodbye- we say thank you, thank you “dad, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend”, for showing us what it meant to truly live and to be loved.
Art is survived by his daughters, Alexandria Campbell (John) and Valeria Thomas; his son, Arthur Monroe Gibson IV (Josie Wright); and his grandchildren: Jonathon Campbell (Elisabeth), Derrick Thomas (Ashley), Cynthia Thomas (Ethan Frasier), Arthur Gibson V, Brendan Gibson, and Caitlyn Gibson. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Isaiah Campbell, Landon Campbell, and Ruth Thomas. In addition, he leaves behind his sisters, Jarlath Warren, Anita Sohaski, and Gloria Sullivan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
Art’s Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, September 12th, at 12:30 pm at Floral Haven and a luncheon will follow at the Floral Haven Family Center from 1:30-3:30.
