Remembering:
It’s a strange thing to mentally cast back over a lifetime. What are the moments or events that define a person? Mom - Barbara Kay Mohn, was a believer in Christ.
Belief was her motivation, her drive, her bedrock. Her faith in Jesus enabled her to give her life and her choices away to His care. Once she saw the truth, hers was an iron will that could not be moved. It was this acceptance of the gospel of Christ that gave her the strength to raise 5 children, take others into her home, and provide support to her friend and husband of over 60 years. She taught alongside Dad and offered invaluable wisdom to all who knew her. She was known to say, “It’s worth doing things God’s way.”
As the oldest son of 5 children, I remember her always being present. Not prone to sentimentality, Mom was kind and loving but not warm and fuzzy. We all knew her deep love for us but her love directed us to seek the same eternal truth that had so captured her years earlier.
Mom was an enigma- She loved people, but preferred being alone. If she knew and trusted you, she could be painfully direct. The family mantra was “And Mom drops another truth bomb.” She was an artist. She was curious. She was a writer. She was filled with questions and longed to explore all the mysteries of the universe. She’s responsible for our love of Tolkien, Star Trek and Star Wars- She encouraged us to seek out truth. This creative outlook combined with a strong stubborn streak is reinforced in her children- and like our mom, must be submitted to Christ.
Mom adored our dad. They encouraged and challenged each other in the faith which made for many spirited discussions! Even at the end, they loved and cared for each other.
As Mom grew older, her tenderness was more readily expressed through loving gestures and words. She was peaceful and radiant during her last months. We were privileged to see what joy and grace and beauty looks like on a human. We will miss her more than can be expressed.
