Barney Ray Mecom's Obituary
Barney Ray Mecom, a distinguished man with a rich and varied life, was born in Milton, Oklahoma on June 19, 1925. Barney peacefully passed away on July 25, 2024. He touched the lives of many through his military service, education career, and unwavering passion for knowledge. A hero’s journey, Barney’s life was deeply intertwined with the military. He proudly served in both World War II and the Korean War, demonstrating courage and commitment. His valor earned him the prestigious Bronze
Star, a symbol of sacrifice and honor.
Barney found fulfillment as an educator. Barney held a master’s degree in Astronomical Physics from Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, Texas. His teaching career began in Peru, Kansas, where he ignited curiosity and inspired countless students. Eventually, he settled and retired in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Barney was a proud member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma where his roots ran deep, connecting him to a vibrant cultural legacy. He carried this heritage with grace and reverence.
Barney was a lifetime member of the following organizations: Veterans of Foreign Wars (Coffeyville, Kansas), American Legion Post 16 (Covington, Louisiana), and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Forty-four years of Barney’s life was also devoted to the American Legion Post 20 (Coffeyville,
Kansas).
But his greatest joy came from family. Survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Melba Mecom, and their children—Richard (Debbie), Bryan (Cindy), and Lendell (Jan)—he cherished family gatherings and celebrated the bonds that spanned generations. Eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren filled his life with laughter, love, and shared memories.
Barney’s impact extended beyond bloodlines; a vast network of friends and loved ones will forever hold him in their hearts.
A final reunion as Barney joins his parents, Thomas and Georgia Mecom, and brother William, we remember a life well-lived—a tapestry woven with bravery, wisdom, and compassion. His legacy lives on, inspiring us to embrace our own journeys with purpose and resilience.
Barney Ray Mecom, soldier, scholar, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and beloved family man, rests in eternal peace.
