Obituary for Beatrice Beverly Mayes Lee
Beatrice Beverly Mayes Lee, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, passed away on June 22, 2026, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Beverly was born on March 15, 1932, in Leslie, Arkansas, to Berry Loyce Hurley and Ida Belle Gibbs Hurley. She grew up in Leslie alongside her brother, Carl Douglas Hurley, before the family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1940. She graduated from Central High School in 1950.
After graduation, Beverly began working for attorney William D. Wooley, where she served as a legal secretary for over 15 years. She was an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, serving as Treasurer, where she met Hobert Mayes. The two began dating, and during his service in the United States Air Force, he was granted leave to return home and marry Beverly on July 8, 1951. Together, they enjoyed life at various Air Force stations and formed lasting friendships with service members and their families, including spending nineteen months in England.
Beverly worked in the credit field and became a dedicated member of the International Credit Women of Oklahoma, where she was elected President and traveled to represent the organization. After her husband’s military service, he joined the Tulsa Postal Service, and Beverly became active in the Oklahoma Postal Auxiliary, also serving as President. She and Hobert purchased the Merchants Retail Adjustment Service and was most proud of owning and running her own business for several years. She sold her business shortly after Hobert passed away in 1982. She was a proud member of Delta Theta Chi for over 35 years and greatly cherished her involvement and friendships there.
In 1991, while working as a Realtor, Beverly met Marion F. Lee when showing his home. They fell in love and were married on November 15, 1991. They made their home in Wagoner, Oklahoma, where Beverly was deeply involved in the community and the Chamber of Commerce. She served for several years as Chairman of the Ambassadors and later as President of the Chamber. She was honored as Grand Marshal of the Wagoner Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade of Lights and Characters for her service. Beverly and Marion enjoyed traveling together in their motor home, exploring new places and meeting many friends along the way.
Beverly’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a devoted mother to her two sons and welcomed their friends into her home, always providing food, love, comfort, and a place of peace. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren and took great joy in cooking for them, giving gifts, and sending thoughtful cards.
She is survived by her sons, Kenneth J. Mayes and his wife Stephanie of Austin, Texas, and Michael A. Mayes and his wife Cynthia of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three granddaughters, Diana Gonzales and her husband Devin, Monica Godman and her husband Gary, and Katie Sherman and her husband David; four great-grandchildren, London and William Sherman, and Addie and Ginny Godman; one step-daughter, Paula Skelton and her husband Terry of Wichita Falls, Texas; and one step-son, Larry Lee of Scotland, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hobert Mayes, who passed on February 25, 1982, after 31 years of marriage; her husband Marion F. Lee, who passed on March 9, 2018, after 26 years of marriage; her parents, Loyce and Ida Belle Hurley; her brother, Carl Douglas Hurley; and her step-son, Rick Lee.
Beverly was a faithful member of Parkview Baptist Church in Tulsa. She trusted deeply in her faith, was devoted to prayer, and lovingly helped others whenever she could. In 2018, she moved to Cedarhurst Independent Living and subsequently to The Parke where she enjoyed fellowship with fellow residents, spending her days visiting, sharing meals, and playing dominoes and Bingo. She loved holidays and especially birthdays and made sure everyone; family, friends, and residents, was recognized and had a card. She was grateful for a long, full life and cherished each moment.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, Garden of Devotion.
Beverly will be remembered for her kindness, her strong faith, her dedication to her family, and the love she shared with all who knew her.
