She loved her 20 Nieces and Nephews and 5 nieces and nephews of Carl’s that she counted as her own. Numerous cousins & extended family members. Berthal was the first daughter of 10 children. Her Father was a farmer, who share cropped different farms around Eufaula, then moved the family to the Mounds/Liberty Mounds area. All the children helped with farming chores. Berthal also helped her Mother with the cooking and taking care of her siblings. She loved school and went thru the 8th grade. High school was not an option at that time without staying in town and she was needed at home. Later she did get her GED, which she was proud of. She married Carl W. Ennis on November 18, 1935 at age 18. Carl was a farmer. When Carl asked her Father for her hand in marriage, he approved, but did so with a disclaimer, saying Carl could have her, but she would never make a farm hand since she was small & couldn’t work the fields like the other children. Carl was very protective of her throughout their 68 years of marriage. They lived in Liberty Mounds until about 1976, when they purchased a cattle ranch with a pecan grove on the banks of Deep Fork River, near Nuyaka, west of Okmulgee. They later downsized & built a new house on part of the ranch & sold the remainder to their Son. They continued a cattle operation that was still active at the time of her passing, with the help of family. During World War II, Berthal worked for about a year at Douglas Aircraft Plant in Tulsa to help with the war efforts. In 1960 until about 1976, she worked at St. Francis Hospital in the Newborn Nursery department as a nurses’ Aide. After that, she worked as a Doctor’s Assistant for a couple of years until they moved to Nuyaka. She & Carl were members of the Duck Creek Free Will Baptist Church in Liberty Mounds for many years, then the Okmulgee Free Will Baptist Church after they moved to Nuyaka. She taught various Sunday School Classes and helped with many years of summer Bible School. She was a member of the Dripping Springs Home Extension Club and was a member of the Liberty group before that. She received her 50 year service pin several years ago. She won many blue ribbons for her baking skills. Her ‘Sister’s Cookies’ were enjoyed by everyone who came to her house and especially her Grandchildren. She remained in her home until 2012 when she moved in with Barbara and Charles. In January of this year, the decision to move to Autumn Leaves, a memory care facility was made.
