Betty Jean Byrd's Obituary
Betty Jean Byrd was born on April 14th, 1927 and passed away Tuesday March 18, 2014. She was born in Ada, Oklahoma to Ross and Dena Golightly, but began her real life as Betty Byrd on September 9th, 1945, when she married Richard W. Byrd, also from Ada. Betty Byrd was the definition of a perfect American wife of the 1950’s and 60’s. She raised a family (one son, Ricky Jr.), maintained an immaculate house and held a full time job. Betty loved her job as a Retail Credit Manager for Sun Oil Company. Upon retirement in 1983, Betty and Dick enjoyed the type of life most people aspire to have. Betty learned to play golf and life was never the same. Betty and Dick spent the next thirty years playing and praying together. They lived their life pursuing their four biggest passions: the church, golf, bridge, and travelling together. Betty was an active member of the Ladies 9-hole Golf Group at LaFortune Park and South Lakes Golf Courses for many years. Betty was also a member in several Bridge Clubs. Betty and Dick took many winter trips to the southern states with others on golf outings. Betty and her husband have been long time members of Memorial Baptist Church in Tulsa OK. They have taken several bus tours with other senior church members. When physical activity became difficult, Betty and Dick moved to Woodland Hills Assisted Living Community where she resided until her death on Tuesday, March 18th, 2014. Memorial services will be held for Betty Byrd at 2:00 pm, on Sunday March 23rd, 2014 at Memorial Baptist Church, 2800 South Yale in Tulsa, OK. Flowers may be sent to Floral Haven, 6500 South 129th E. Ave., Broken Arrow, OK 74012. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her two siblings, Lester Golightly of Concord, CA and Dorothy Caldwell of Tulsa.
