I met Bryan in 2004 at Apollo‘s Karate. At that time, we had both started as white belts and shared class several times a week. We would do so for about the next 10 years as we earned our black belts together. He was one of the few mainstays throughout that time and someone that I always looked forward to seeing at class. He was 34 years older than me, but that certainly didn’t seem to be the case on the mat. He was amongst the most aggressive, skillful and well conditioned training partners in the room.
Not only did we share countless sparring matches, we would also try to innovate new approaches to techniques as well as discuss many other topics including education and work. He was incredibly intelligent and very generous with his knowledge, and I was fortunate to learn a great deal from him.
Bryan is included in many of my fondest memories from that time. I was truly saddened to hear of his passing, but I am more grateful to have spent so much time with him.
