If you remember the movie "Stripes" and how they both joined the army. Well I was working at Oertle's and one day after high school Wayne walks in the store and says "Lets join the army and see the world" and I said noway. Both of us had broke of engagements with our girl friends and he finally talked me into to it. I found out during basic training he had told his girl friend we were drafted though. Not many people know this, but Wayne was almost kicked out of the army, because he forgot to mention the steel pins in his leg. He felt bad because he had talked me into this adventure, so he pleaded with the army to let him stay in and give it a try.We both made it through training and even survived a plane crash landing in Ft. Dix NJ on our way to ship out to Germany. Because of this the army had to fly our group to Germany in order to catch up with our paperwork which was already on the way to Germany and we were held in Ft Dix while the FAA finished their inspection of the crash. Seems as though the airlines told them one story and our group told the truth about what happened. We did enjoy 2 1/2 years in Germany.
