He was the Employee Relations Manager of the Lyondell chemical plant in Houston for many years, and later returned to Sand Springs, Oklahoma and later retired from that location. Education was extremely important to him. He worked his own way through college and always taught his two daughters, Michelle Simmons Hollingworth and Eugenia Simmons Hansen to value education above all else. He would help anyone, even acquaintances, if they expressed a desire to go to college or to improve themselves through education. He met his wife, Barbara after retirement and they married in 1987. They shared many interests in antiques and cooking and had a loving relationship that everyone could see was special. Barbara and Carl had many friends at Mathis Brothers Furniture when he was employed as Training Manager.
