Aloha and My Sincere Condolences to the loving family of Charles Barthel.

I was a Crewchief in his helicopter unit in Vietnam, the 176th Assault Helicopter Company located in Chu Lai. I had the honor of flying with your father who we affectionately called "Black Bart". He was probably one of two of the most competent and skilled pilots I ever had fly my aircraft. But more than that, he was greatly liked/loved by everyone who knew him or flew with him. He was injured one time and I made sure to visit him in the hospital along with his normally assigned aircraft crew. So sorry that I didn't get to meet him once again. I last saw him in Vietnam before he left. I departed in early April 1970.

If any of you wish to contact me to ask about him as a young aviator I will be glad to share any stories I recall.

I was so sorry to hear the news about Charles. Charles was one of those people who you remember. I only worked with Charles for a few years in the late 1990's, but I liked him a lot.

My favorite memory is my 37th or 38th birthday in the late 1990's. Charles, Skip, and I were at a consulting project in Tullahoma, TN. I picked a very forgettable Mexican restaurant despite polite, but sadly too subtle for me, hints that this might not be the best spot in town. It wasn't. The story so far: a rather sad birthday, away from my young family, now eating a dreadful meal. Then we went for a "birthday drink" (or a lot) and Charles regaled me with hilarious stories about his time flying helicopters in Vietnam - there was one about delivering supplies on Thanksgiving that had me in stitches. Anyway, Charles turned a melancholy evening into one that I clearly remember today as one of my most memorable birthdays.

I met Charles and Akemi on a river cruise a few years ago. Wonderful experience. Although reluctant to speak of his service as a helicopter pilot, he did open up to a fellow veteran. He told of some really harrowing experiences. He was truly an American Hero and I hope and pray he will be remembered as such. He had a strong faith in the Lord and is with Him for sure. Blessings to his family.

Akimi, we are saddened to hear of Charles' passing. Please know that you and your family are in our hearts during this time, and we will be praying for the peace of God to surround you and comfort you!

I will always remember seeing you and Charles at the memorial service for Christopher Horton several years ago. Your being there impacted me with that display of your love and respect for this country. I also enjoy seeing you at church on Sundays, of course!
