Charles Gene Gillem's Obituary
Charles Gene Gillem, fondly known as Brother, Son, Dad, Daddy, Charlie, Puck, Chuck, Papa, and Granddaddy, departed from this world on April 15, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 81. Born on December 6, 1942, in Bakersfield, California, Charles led a remarkable life filled with love, service, and dedication to his country and family.
During his formative years, Charles displayed a passion for sports and academics. He excelled in track, was an active member of the chess club, and honed his skills in automotive classes. His thirst for adventure and commitment to serving his nation led him to enlist in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1969. Throughout his tenure, he served with distinction on several ships, notably the USS Rainier, and navigated the waters of Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, Hawaii, and even the enigmatic Bermuda Triangle, with his home base at North Island in San Diego, California.
While stationed in the Navy, Charles met his first wife, Dianna, with whom he shared the joy of fatherhood, welcoming two daughters into the world, Tasha and Audra. After his honorable discharge, Charles transitioned to civilian life, relocating to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked diligently as a hod carrier. He took great pride in his craftsmanship, notably constructing a full fireplace made entirely of red bricks.
Driven by his entrepreneurial spirit, Charles founded Gillem’s Appliance Repair, Inc., where he showcased his technical prowess and dedication to service. He was not only a skilled businessman but also a devoted father, imparting his knowledge of racetrack car maintenance to Tasha and teaching Audra to play the violin and appreciate music. After relocating back to California with his family, Charles became a pillar of strength and guidance for his grandchildren. His altruistic nature extended beyond his family, as he was known for his unwavering support and assistance to those in need.
Charles embraced his faith wholeheartedly and was baptized into the Church of Latter-Day Saints. His devotion to his beliefs was evident in his actions, as he served his community and cherished his relationship with Heavenly Father.
The union of Dianna and Charles eventually came to an end as they went their separate ways, remaining both friends, and loving parents. Charles found love again and married Connie. Together, they shared many years until Connie's passing in 2018. In his later years, Charles found solace and companionship with his beloved dog, Jazzy.
The family expresses deep gratitude to Charles' devoted neighbors, Marge, Greg, Margaret, and Daye, for their unwavering support and care. Special appreciation is extended to Wayne, Charles' best friend, for his steadfast companionship and compassion.
Charles Gillem is survived by his daughters, Tasha Gillem Johnston (Rick) and Audra Gillem Delaney (Joseph), brother Kevin Gillem (Marla), sisters Wendy Mock, Melanie Mock, and Tanya Elliot, many nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews that will miss him deeply.
