Rev. Charles Mack Herndon's Obituary
Rev. Charles M. Herndon was born on January 2, 1937, at his home in Madill, Oklahoma. He entered into life eternal on Wednesday, July 20th, 2016. Charles was a much beloved pastor within the Oklahoma United Methodist Annual Conference. His last appointment was with First United Methodist Church of Vinita, OK. In his retirement, he served as the chaplain for the Oklahoma Methodist Manor. Charles attended Grade School in California, and Texas, graduated from Healton High School in 1955, achieved a Bachelor of Art in Education-Social Studies from Southeastern State University in 1958 and a Master of Divinity from Saint Paul School of Theology, Kansas City, Missouri in 1964. He continued his education by completing Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through Phillips Theological Seminary, Enid, Oklahoma in 1973. In his appointments, Charles did extensive maintenance on church property, new building projects, and program and staff development, increased the financial base of the congregations, and redefined local church self-image and mission. Charles served on various District and Annual Conference Boards and Committees. Education and teaching were his passions. He served his local congregations and the Oklahoma Annual Conference through Sunday School Consultation, Small Church Consultation, Vision 2000 Consultation, Group Process, Program Design, Teaching, Finance and Administration, Hospice Training, Certified Lab Leader in Adults, Confirmation, worked in Conference Human Sexuality program: Junior High, Senior High and Older Elementary. The 6h Grade Camp of the Oklahoma United Methodist Camping program was a favorite of his where he could share his love of creation with children and youth. Charles is preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Margaret Herndon. He is survived by his wife, Margie Herndon; and children, Mark and Linda Herndon of Oklahoma City; EvaMarie and Myers Campbell of Tulsa; Alan and Elisha Herndon of Hutchinson, KS; a sister June Wilson of Tuttle; and brother Wayne and Vicki Herndon of Owasso; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great step-granddaughter and one great granddaughter. Our family thanks Seasons Hospice of Tulsa, Oklahoma Methodist Manor and The Boston Avenue United Methodist Church friends for their loving support and care. A service of celebration for his life will be held on Saturday, August 6th, 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of The Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to The Boston Avenue United Methodist Church or Oklahoma Methodist Manor.
