Charles N. Johnson's Obituary
Charles “Charlie” Johnson, born March 21, 1939, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Fay Johnson and Dorothy (Allred) Johnson, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025. On October 3, 1958, Charlie married the love of his life, Frances Shook, in Tulsa. Together, they shared over 66 wonderful years of marriage. Their greatest joy was raising their daughter, Kathy. Charlie was also a proud and loving Papa to Madison Hunt and Miles Flusche, and Great-Grand Papa to Jaxson and Ainsley Hunt.
Charlie received many honors for his selfless devotion, dedication, and loyalty, always going above and beyond the call of duty. His concern for and response to the needs of others enriched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Charlie served his country by joining the Army National Guard in 1961. After his honorable discharge, he and Frances settled in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
A 32nd-degree Mason, Charlie was recognized in 2013 for 50 years of service to Freemasonry.
An accomplished carpenter, Charlie learned his trade in high school and worked on several major projects, including the Keystone Dam and the Skelly Building. In 1962, he began a career at St. John Medical Center that would span over four decades. Through hard work and dedication, he advanced from Trades Supervisor to Director of Maintenance, and ultimately to Administrative Vice President of Facilities and Construction Management.
His commitment to the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother took him abroad to places such as Rome, Italy; St. Lucia; and Barbados, among others. Sister Therese Gottschalk, President and CEO of St. John Medical Center, said it best: “Charlie’s belief is if you do it nearly perfect the first time, you won’t have to redo it.”
When he wasn’t devoting his time to St. John, Charlie enjoyed boating, camping, and gardening. Later, he began coaching his daughter’s softball teams. When Kathy expressed a desire to learn fastpitch softball, Charlie poured his heart into supporting her, leading to her earning a full-ride scholarship to play the sport she loved.
Upon retirement, Charlie and Frances spent 15 wonderful years on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees. When not traveling, they loved watching every game Madison and Miles played—be it football, softball, or baseball.
As Charlie’s health began to decline, he and Frances returned to Broken Arrow to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter. Over the past five years, he found great joy in becoming Great-Grand Papa to twins Jaxson and Ainsley.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Fay Johnson Jr.; his sister, Hazle Harless; and his beloved Chow, Midnight.
He is survived by his loving wife, Frances; his daughter, Kathy, and her husband, Bob Wallace; grandchildren Miles Flusche, and Madison Hunt and her husband, Adam; great-grandchildren Jaxson and Ainsley Hunt; and a special niece, LuAnn Pfeifer Cotton.
A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at Floral Haven in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
