Christine Mills Holmes' Obituary
Christine Mills Holmes
April 11, 1928 - March 8, 2023
Christine Mills Holmes - beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend - went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at age 94. A life-long learner, Christine earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Michigan State University. She spent many years teaching elementary school English both in the United States and Latin America. Her students knew her as kind, patient, and creative, often finding fun and memorable ways to teach lessons.
Christine’s life revolved around her family - her five children, twelve grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren - and her love of travel. She was known for her steadfast Christian faith, her selflessness, generosity, intelligence, grace, and endless love. She traveled the world until she was well into her 80s, often spending time in Latin American countries, like Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Colombia. In between her travels, she spent her time with family. Always willing to help however she could, she would pick up grandkids from school, cook healthy meals (her chicken soup was delicious), and simply be present as a listening ear, an extra set of hands, or whatever was needed.
To know Christine was to love her. She embodied Romans 12:9-13, the description of love in action. She spent her final days just like many of her other days - at home surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her five children and their spouses - Steve Holmes and Starr McCamant, Sue (Holmes) Davidson and Steve Smeltzer, Sarah (Holmes) and Dave Dankert, Richard and Ruth Holmes, and John Holmes and Jeanna Bailey Holmes - as well as ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is and always will be dearly missed.
