I have never known anyone stronger than my nephew Corey McDonald. When he discovered as a very young man that he had inherited a life threatening kidney condition his response, after his health improved somewhat, was to emulate those who compassionately cared for him in the hospital. He pursued and obtained his own Registered Nurse credentials. While struggling with the effects of his disease and with treatment and dialysis, he applied his own compassionate care for others as a dedicated medical professional. When his treatment could no longer keep ahead of the disease, his loving, working, single mom donated one of her kidneys to her oldest son. (Mothers like Joyce McDonald who sacrifice of themselves for the sake of their children are the best example of Godâ??s unconditional love that we have been given.) Eventually his medications and complications caused circulation problems which resulted in amputation of both of his legs. Again, exhibiting amazing strength, Corey fought through his loss of limbs and learned to function effectively with his prostheses. He also became a vocal advocate for others who perform miraculous feats in spite of such losses. His kidney disease never subsided. Dialysis and the inability to find another donated kidney took a gradual toll on his body. I never witnessed any reduction in his determination or his strength of spirit. In his seemingly short 44 years he fought hard, worked compassionately, loved strongly, and inspired all who know him. I believe the strength of Corey McDonald can have but one source. Almighty God does not immediately remove His children from their earthly trials. He does give them the Love and the strength to endure them until, in His wisdom and in His time, He welcomes them home.
