Danny was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 23, 1957, and was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Danny graduated from John McDonough Senior High Class of 1977 and Katie Barber and Cosmetology School in New Orleans. Danny was a Master Barber and an entrepreneur. Together with his wife Kim, he started two thriving businesses, the Ohana Sub and Deli with two locations in Hawaii. Their first location started in May of 2014 in Wahiawa, Hawaii and it grew so much that they had to start their second location in Aiea, Hawaii. Danny was affectionately known as “Uncle” to his staff and friends in Hawaii. He was a self-taught pianist and musician and went on to study the theory of music at Campo Music in New Orleans. Danny loved music and was a proud member of the High Voltage band in New Orleans. He also played with various well-known artists and bands all over the world.
This beautiful love story began almost 30 years ago with a chance meeting at a political fundraising event for Mayor Marc Morial in New Orleans at Audubon Park. Danny was a part of the group that was performing. Kim was standing in the audience, and it was raining that day when she noticed one of the band members staring her way. It was Danny! His gaze continued so Kim turned around to see who he was looking at since she did not know him. When she turned back to face the stage, he was still looking at her, his gaze never stopped. Danny left the stage during a break and walked over to where Kim was standing under a borrowed umbrella. He introduced himself and told her he had been praying for a God-fearing woman who he could spend the rest of his life with. Although Danny did not drink, he offered to take Kim for drinks after the event. They met and talked for hours, sharing their experience with the Christian convert class they were both in, but at separate churches. They dated for 4 months during which their love for each other grew stronger. They married shortly thereafter, and Danny’s gaze never ceased. His loving look continued until the day of his transition.
After their honeymoon they move to Tulsa, OK. where Kim’s brother resided. The were there for 18 years. They were members of Grace Apostolic Church until they left to join Community Apostolic Ministries, the church founded and lead by her brother Pastor Roy K. Brown. During his tenure at Community Apostolic, Danny was quickly appointed to the office of a Deacon and served faithfully in every aspect of the position. Pastor Brown knew he could count on Deacon Benson to make sure the doors were opened on time. He was a faithful supporter in his giving; and with his musical service, he took care of the maintenance of the church as well as the church grounds. He was a man of prayer and a man of his word. Deacon Benson always “said what he meant” and “meant what he said”. He adored his family and God. To meet Danny was to love him. His smile and character were infectious. In 2014 Danny and Kim decided to settle down in Oahu, Hawaii where he spent his final years. They were members of The International City of Refuge Christian Church Ministries until the day he entered into eternal rest.
Danny will be sorely missed but never forgotten. His chapter has been closed, but his story will never end.
Danny will be forever missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
