Davene Sue Alford's Obituary
Davene Sue Alford passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017.She was 88. She was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma on September 14, 1928. Her parents, David and Flora Cornell were Chilocco Indian School graduates, the same school from which she graduated in 1946.After graduation, she met and married Eugene R. Alford, Sr., a World War II veteran, in 1946. Together, they raised four children, Eugene Jr., Yvonne, Dianne and Janene. In addition to being a devoted mother, she worked at Shell Oil and was part of the early computer revolution. She retired from there in 1994.She also served her community working alongside her husband at the Bowen Indian Mission, especially with the annual All Indian Basketball tournaments. She also served as Secretary for the Indian Falls Creek Baptist Assembly in the 1960s and as the organist for the Bowen Indian Baptist Church. She found great joy in assisting the National Chilocco Alumni as Secretary and Member-at-Large; she also helped with the Scholarship Pow-wow committee and organize benefit pow-wows.Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching and she loved working crossword and number fill-in puzzles. Sue was an avid reader, enjoying the morning newspaper and novels and she took in many movies. She spent quality time at casinos, playing penny slots and was known as a hot-shot winner. She spent hours playing dominoes, telling family stories and sharing laughs with her kinfolks and friends.In recognition of her many years of service, she was inducted into the Chilocco Hall of Fame in 2003. Along with her husband, they were the first married couple in Chilocco’s history inducted into their Hall of Fame. She was also a life time member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, Military Order of the Purple Heart of the USA.She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.Preceded in death by her husband, Eugene W. Alford, Sr.; two grandsons, William D. Alford and Tike Danson Alford Chapman and great granddaughter, Autumn Proctor.Viewing will be held Friday, September 1, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel.Wake Services will be held Friday, September 1, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel.Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.
