David James Swatsenbarg's Obituary
David James Swatsenbarg, 47, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, passed away on July 20, 2026, in Poteau, Oklahoma. He was born on September 8, 1978, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Bobby Dean Swatsenbarg and Barbara Sue (Pollok) Swatsenbarg.
David was raised in Tulsa and attended Will Rogers High School. He later completed the paramedic program through Cherokee Nation EMS in 2012. He went on to serve as a dedicated paramedic across northeast and southeast Oklahoma, touching countless lives through his compassion and skill. Most recently, he worked with Pafford EMS, where he served as a supervisor and was honored with the Star of Life award in 2023. Throughout his career, David was part of many life-saving moments, including delivering multiple babies—among them, a set of twins—and receiving recognition for his role in critical Code Saves.
In 2003, David made Broken Arrow his home, where he built a life centered around family, laughter, and adventure. He was an excellent griller, known for his skill in grilling delicious steaks, and found joy in jeeping through the mountains and hiking in the outdoors. He had a deep love for animals and never missed the opportunity to stop and show affection to any that crossed his path.
Above all, David’s greatest pride and joy was being a father. He cherished every moment with his children and embraced life with a playful spirit—often reflected in his love for whimsical socks. Some of his favorite things as a dad were matching outfits with his son Will, going on vacation with his family and inquiring about Kaylie’s classroom and purchasing fun items for her students to enjoy. He will be remembered as funny, fun-loving, and always ready for whatever came next.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Sue Swatsenbarg.
He is survived by his children, Kaylie and Will Swatsenbarg of Broken Arrow; his former spouse, Laura Swatsenbarg of Broken Arrow; his brothers, Bobby Swatsenbarg and wife Jackie of Sand Springs, and Michal Swatsenbarg of Calera, Oklahoma; along with several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his two beloved—and notoriously mischievous—miniature Australian Shepherds, Millie and Mabel.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the leadership team at Pafford EMS for the kindness and support shown to David over the past couple of years. They also wish to share that David participated in the Shatterproof program for first responders at FHE Health in Florida. The family believes he received comprehensive and compassionate care at Shatterproof far above anything offered in Oklahoma. The family also encourages any first responder, or those who love one, who may be struggling with alcoholism or addiction to seek out the Shatterproof program.
David will be remembered for his kindness, his willingness to help others, his joyful spirit, and most importantly, the love he had for his children. The family asks that he be remembered for the man he truly was—a devoted father, a caring friend, and someone who brought light into the lives of others.
A casual come-and-go memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Floral Haven Family Center.
