Remembering Don Rice,
Don, Mr. Yankee of Broken Arrow, I hope he takes that Yankees cap with him. I wasn’t a Yankees fan. But we both had the love of Oklahoma State to talk about.
I’ve known Don for over 40 years. I got to know Don through being initiated in the family and knowing I survived once divorced out of the “Calk” family. The past 20 years has been via distance and only talking through Facebook. He was one of the good guys you want on your team. I remember Don as a family man, loving dad (to any kid that he coached) he helped out to make sure the kid improved. He always made time to strike up a conversation. Always had a story and strong advice.
I always liked what Don had to say. He said things it like it was in real life. If you didn’t agree, so be it. He didn’t care. You learned quickly to never challenge him on his knowledge about baseball. He knew it all, stats years and players.
When I see friends pass away. It’s always feels like they died to young. I don’t let the days go by without thinking positive about my loved ones.
I will miss that old guy. Jamie, I’m so sorry for your loss.
May Peace be with you Jamie and Jeff,
Brent
