Donald Gene Thorne's Obituary
Donald Gene Thorne, a man of many talents and adventures, passed away on April 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and a life well lived. Born on January 24, 1934, Donald grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Will Rogers High School before earning his Associate degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Donald proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and later dedicated himself to the secret service, embodying a strong sense of duty and commitment. He excelled in his career as both a mechanical and instructional engineer, using his expertise to solve problems and inspire those around him.
A thrill-seeker at heart, Donald lived life in the fast lane—literally. As a Corvette racer for Chevrolet, he competed at renowned tracks such as Sebring and Daytona, also finding exhilaration in motorcycle racing. His passion for adventure extended beyond the raceway, as he spent years enjoying the "lake life" at Grand Lake.
Beyond his professional achievements and racing pursuits, Donald had a deep love for animals. As a proud member of the American Quarter Horse Association, he owned a ranch where he raised cattle, and he was known as the "animal whisperer"—a title well-earned by his uncanny ability to connect with creatures of all kinds. His family often joked that they couldn’t tell whether he loved the animals more or if they loved him more.
Above all, Donald was a storyteller, a jokester, and a joy to be around. His happy-go-lucky spirit made him a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He shared countless laughs and cherished moments with those closest to him, making every gathering a little brighter.
Donald is reunited with his beloved wife, Caryl Lynn Thorne, and son, Mark Thorne, who preceded him in passing. He leaves behind his loving son, Jay Thorne and fiancée Donna; his brother David, and wife Jeannie Thorne; nieces and nephews Shannon and Chad Stabers, Clint Smith, Wendy and Kip Fedora; and a host of other family members and dear friends who will forever cherish the memories he gave them.
While he may no longer be with us, Donald’s spirit will live on in the stories he told, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.
