Burial will be private in the Covington Cemetery. Edith was born in a little house on the prairie between Douglas and Fairmont, OK on October 7, 1908, one year after Oklahoma’s Statehood. She was one of seven children born to W.C. and Ruth Fairfield Kirk. She passed away peacefully in Tulsa on August 2nd, two months shy of her 101st birthday. After graduating from Douglas High School, Edith then attended Oklahoma A&M College, now known as OSU. She received her teaching certification after two years and taught in one room country schools for several years, including Harmony School in Noble County, Vernon and Del Norte Schools in Garfield County. She met her future husband, William B. (Bill) Snyder when she went to teach at Harmony School. She boarded with the Snyder family near Orlando whose land was called “school land” as the school was on the Snyder property. This land had been obtained by Bill’s father, Martin, in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. On May 27, 1933 Edith married Bill in Hennessey, OK. They lived in Lucien for a short time and then moved to Covington where Dick, Bruce, and Helen were born. She and Bill were married for 61 years. Edith lived in Covington until 1998 when she moved to Tulsa after the loss of her eldest son. She was an active member of Covington Christian Church and then Southside Christian in Tulsa, a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star and she served on the Enid/Garfield County Library Board for 13 years, helping to get the bond issue passed to build the present building. Last October she became a member of the Centenarian Club of Oklahoma. Edith’s faith, family, and home were the most important ingredients in her life.
