Edris Ilene Rogers' Obituary
Edris Ilene Rogers, 99, was granted the fulfillment of the promise of the Lord she had lived for since she was eight years old when on Saturday, June 22, 2019 He came again to receive her unto Himself that where He is she might be also. Edris’s unusual and beautiful name was the name of an angel in a book her father was reading at the time of her birth. The description of the angel Edris was very prophetic. “And what of Edris? A woman whose influence on all is strangely sweet and lasting – whose spirit overflows with tenderest sympathy for all the many wants and sorrows of mankind – whose voice charms away cares – whose smile engenders peace – whose eyes, lustrous and thoughtful are unclouded by any shadow – and on whose serene beauty the passing of years leaves little visible trace. That she is fair and wise, joyous, radiant and holy is apparent to all – not so much sweet woman as most perfect angel.” Edris was born on September 5, 1919 in Claremore, Ok into a large and loving family with a legacy of faith over many generations. Her father Fred Omar Rodgers and mother Nancy Clementine Rodgers soon moved to Pryor, Ok with their happy growing family. Edris had two beautiful sisters and five mischievous brothers. She finished high school in Pryor and attended for a short time Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Ok. She married the love of her life Richard Nelson Rogers on May 3, 1941. Richard was enlisted in the Navy so for a short time Edris moved home to Pryor to be with family. Daughter Carole was born in 1942 and a son Richard Jr was born in 1944. After the war they moved with their young family to Tulsa and in 1949 a daughter Linda was born and another son Marc in 1956. Our mother Edris lived her life in service to her family and extended family. Her home was always welcoming to family and friends near and far. She and daddy provided for us a safe and magical childhood – travel, fun family events, and best of all a wonderful Christian education. Calvary Baptist Church – just a short walk from our front door was the center of family social activities. Edris was a gifted seamstress and handmade many of her children’s and grandchildren’s clothes. She was a wonderful cook and we had lots of canned vegetables from daddy’s backyard garden. When we were little mother read aloud to us every night before bed – a sweet and precious memory. Lunches were packed every morning before school and most mornings mother baked a pan of cookies for our lunches. Our home smelled wonderfully of something baking. Every event was a reason to celebrate, holidays, school starting, school ending, weddings, graduations (sometimes traveling great distances). Easter egg hunts for grandchildren even drew neighbors to watch the fun. Edris was for many years a member of Tulsa Christian Women’s Club and for several years she hosted a Christmas Cookie party for those very special and dearly loved friends. The Bible says in Corinthians 1:21-22…”He has anointed us, set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” Our darling mother lived all her life under that seal…in peace and joy and expectancy and trust. She knew she was in God’s hands and always exhibited a vibrant calm. Growing older did not rob our beautiful mother of her sweetness, graciousness, optimism, deep faith or devotion and great love for her family. Edris is survived by her daughter Carole Mann, by her daughter Linda Gilleland and her husband Jerry, by son Marc and wife Marsha, and by Debbie Rogers, wife of deceased son Rick Rogers. Also by 11 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren and one on the way. Also by many nieces and nephews and cousins. Edris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years and son Richard Jr. Also preceded in death by her parents and all brothers and sisters. Edris will be remembered as a blessing to all who knew her. She loved her family in God-sized ways that surely brought glory to His Holy Name.Visitation will be held from 5 pm – 8 pm on Wednesday, June 26 at Floral Haven Funeral Home.Services will take place at 2 pm on Thursday, June 27 at Calvary Baptist Church – 7216 East Admiral Place Tulsa, OK.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made Calvary Campus – First Baptist Owasso – 7216 East Admiral Place Tulsa, OK.
