Edward John Sutich's Obituary
Edward John Sutich ~ September 3, 1956 to October 6, 2021
Died at the age of 65 In Reno, Nevada
Eddie was born on September 3, 1956 in Winton, Minnesota to Adelyne Olive (Skyberg) Sutich and Anthony Joseph Peter Sutich. He passed away in Reno Nevada on October 6, 2021, at the age of 65. He went to Yerington High School in Nevada and attended college in Reno, Nevada where he received a degree in Mining Engineering. He worked in the United States and also abroad.
Ed loved the outdoors. He loved to fish, hunt, hike, jog, swim, BBQ and travel, and he was very active in several sports in school. He was a decorated swimmer, top wrestler, played high school football, and went to Boy’s State. One of Eddie's favorite foods was hotdogs. After football or wrestling practice he would take a fork, pierce the hotdog and cook it over the flame of the burner on the kitchen stove. If his mom caught him, she would chastise him and tell him that he was cleaning up the mess. Besides job related travels, he visited several locations within the United States and also visited Singapore and Australia. He went to Croatia with his father a number of times to visit family there.
In 1979, Ed Graduated from college, married Julie Minor, began his first mining job in Arizona in an Underground Mine, and began raising a family. They first had a son and then boy/girl twins.
He and his family remained in the United States until 1987 at which time they went to Indonesia for two years, which he loved. They returned to the States in 1989 to an Open Pit mining job in Elko, Nevada. He worked at least 20 years for Newmont Mining in Elko and also in Uzbekistan before going to Indonesia again. He worked in Uzbekistan from June 2000 to March 2002, was learning Russian, but had to return to the states because of 9/11. He returned again to ELko until 2006. He loved working overseas at Freeport-McMoRan in Tembagapura, Indonesia so he did that twice, once with his first wife, Julie, and their children, from 1987 to 1989, and then with his second wife, Sharon, from November 2006 to early 2012. He was fluent in the Indonesian language, Bahasa. Working overseas offered lots of opportunities to travel which he loved. Ed returned to the states to Northern Idaho in 2012 before his last overseas mining trip, which was to Mongolia. When he returned to the United States the final time, he purchased a house in Fernley, Nevada to be close to his children and grandchildren.
Ed had a good sense of humor and loved people. He was the fourth of six children and he made himself available to help his siblings with problem solving and also financially at times. He enjoyed woodworking and built an entertainment center. He taught children’s Sunday School for many years. He helped his oldest sister find a church home when she moved to a state 2,000 miles away. By talking to some of the people he knew, he was able to come up with the name of a pastor and a specific church in her new location. She appreciated him and loved him immensely! Ed truly cared and was an easy person with whom to talk. After retirement, Ed spent as much time as possible with his children and his grandchildren, and he valued that time. He also enjoyed visiting with his ex, Sharon, and with his siblings. He enjoyed carpentry and he and his younger son, Jeff, worked on various projects.
Ed enjoyed music, particularly music from the 60's and played songs from that era every chance he got. When his sister bought the family a cabinet style record player for Christmas in 1967, he was 11, and he said that he would lay on the floor for hours listening to music. He also loved Christmas music. (quote from Sharon) “Ed’s favorite time of year had to be Christmas. He would enjoy playing Christmas music all day long starting soon after the beginning of the month until the day after Christmas. Literally, on Christmas Eve he would play it all night long on his clock radio. I usually didn’t get much sleep on Christmas Eve! ”
