Grandma was definitely the gold standard, always a lady, a woman by which all others should be measured. In the summertime, during school break, we had the privilege of going to Lucerne Valley, California to spend time with Grandma at her chicken farm. All the cousins and good friends' kids would gather and this woman was able to juggle making sure all (about 9) of us stayed safe, fed, and out of trouble while she tended the feeding, watering, and clean up of the never ending long barns of chicks. Not to mention caring for Uncle David throughout the day, and the grown ups too. All this and never missed a beat. One of my favorite memories was at the end of one of those hot summer days, we kids took turns in groups taking a ride in the scoop of the tractor and when it got dark, there was a bonfire with Aunt Barbara and family. They grilled rattlesnake! And we ate some! None of us kids wanted the day to end to go inside to take baths so rather than fuss about it too much, the grown ups threatened to dump us in the horse trough (and then did)! Of course then off to a bath to wash off any horse slobber.... Never lost her temper though, and was up bright and early to start the next day. I'll miss you Grandma! There's no one in the world like you!
