Ella Marie Self's Obituary
Ella Marie Self, 98, Broken Arrow, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023. Christian faith was an essential part of Ella’s life and she was looking forward to the Lord calling her home. Ella was born on January 30, 1925, in Fairfax, OK to Otis Warren Bennett and Cornelia Phillips Bennett. She and her sister, Lucy were raised by relatives after the death of her mother. As a young woman, she also lived in Wichita, Kansas with her sister’s family and worked for the telephone company. After the war, she moved from Wichita to Nelagoney, OK. She was proud of the fact that she had been accepted into nursing school. While living in Nelagoney, she was introduced to Ralph Self and they were married in 1944. She moved to Broken Arrow to join Ralph in his family’s farming operation. Additionally, she filled in as a rural school teacher for one year and also worked as a telephone operator in Tulsa. She loved living in the country and helping Ralph feed the cattle, work on the farm, and tend her garden. On the evening of January 5th, 1963, Ella accepted Jesus as her Savior, and on January 13th, 1963 she was baptized at the Sheridan Road Baptist Church. For many years she was an active member of Sunnyside Baptist Church. Recently, she was living in a retirement home in Broken Arrow where she enjoyed doing puzzles and watching church services.
Ella was predeceased by her husband Ralph and her sister Lucy. Survivors include two nephews, Richard Shafer and Walter Shafer, and their families.
A funeral service will be held at Floral Haven Chapel on Friday, December 22nd at 12:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children-Owasso at obhc.org or mailed to 3800 N. May Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73112.
