Elvin Eugene George's Obituary
Elvin Eugene George transitioned to his heavenly home Friday, December 2nd, 2022 the date, of his 92nd birthday. He was born to Albert Eric and Edna Belle (Oard) George, the seventh child, and fourth son of a family of eight children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Dorothy, Earl, Laura, Max, Marjorie, and Louis, and two grandsons, Mikel Travis and Scott David George.
Elvin attended, as did his siblings, a one-room rural elementary school. No matter what the weather was, by walking a mile across the neighbor's pasture. In 1948 he graduated from Lonsford, Rural High School. Elvin loved playing sports, basketball, football, and track. During his senior year, he was Captain of the football team and king of the School's Fall Carnival. He loved music and singing in the Boy's quartet, madrical, and chorus. Algebra and English..not so much. Come winter he and his buddy would set trap lines for small animal hides to sell. His Favorite pastime was singing Barber Shop style with his four brothers The family's father passed away when Elvin was 15. The older siblings were married, or in the service, so Edna, with her two youngest sons, moved to the small town of Longford. Elvin had a part-time job of driving the water truck delivering Longford 100 percent pure water throughout the community at $3.00 a load. Summers found him following the Wheat Harvest, from Oklahoma to the Dakotas, scooping wheat from bin to bin. Hard work.
After graduating Elvin worked on construction helping to build the new gym at the high school and courting Ermagene. April 23, 1949, he was united in marriage with Ermagene Marrs. In September they moved to Abilene, Kansas where he was employed on a Hereford Farm. The hours were long and 7 days a week so come Spring he sought different work and moved to town. Two children were born into this union. Georgia Gene arrived first to be followed by little brother Gary Eugene.
September of 1955 Elvin dedicated his life to Jesus Christ and in the following years, in addition to full-time work he would share his faith by teaching a Sunday School class, leading a children's choir, and a nursing home ministry.
He had always planned that when they became empty nesters he would leave Abilene for greener pastures. October 1975 the opportunity presented itself when brother Don called wanting to know if Elvin would be interested in Helping a new Enterprise in Tulsa Oklahoma, would Elvin catch a plane and come to Tulsa for an interview? The next day Elvin drove to Wichita and hopped a plane for Tulsa. Elvin accepted the challenge of JT Industries. Tulsa was a cultural shock but he loved the challenge and was fearless. He drafted his helpmate to be his navigator and together they learned to navigate the industrial section of NE Oklahoma. Elvin always nourished in his heart the dream of his own business, to be his own boss. In 1983 he set about to make it happen. The name would be George & George Industrial & Safety Supplies. Gloves would be the specialty adding all the safety equipment necessary. Starting out small and growing. Computers to keep track of inventory and his wife to man the office. First, an office/warehouse at the Farm then moving to 40th Street bigger space, and finally acquiring a warehouse/office space, the venture flourished. In 1998 they sold the business to retire. Elvin was soon bored and managed to find part-time jobs that interested him. During those years the couple found time to travel and see all 50 states, go to Israel with their church group, traverse Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and visit Mexico and the Caribbean. Not to mention many trips to Kansas to be with family.
Elvin leaves to mourn his passing; Ermagene, his wife of almost 74 years. his daughter, Georgia and husband, Randal Baker, of Tulsa; son, Gary, and wife, Tammy, of Monument, Colorado. His only living brother, Donald George of Wichita. Six grandchildren: Kristy and husband Dan Byrd, San Antonio, TX, Toby and Karen George, Ft Worth, TX, Lyndsay George, Great Bend, KS,, Meredith Easter, Ft Worth, TX, Eric George of, Oak Harbor, WA; and Ashley and husband Cory MacMahon of Monument, CO; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
