Eugene Hugh Pyeatt, lovingly known as Gene, passed away on August 15, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 93. Born on February 13, 1932, in Guymon, Oklahoma, Gene was the son of Hugh and Irene Pyeatt.
On August 23, 1952, Gene married the love of his life, Betty, in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Together, they built a beautiful marriage that spanned nearly 73 years, filled with devotion, hard work, and the joy of raising their family.
Gene attended college in Stillwater, Oklahoma, before working alongside his father in the family’s Maytag store. Later, he moved to Oklahoma City, where he worked as an insurance adjuster, and eventually settled in Tulsa. Over the years, Gene lived in Lawton, Ardmore, and Tulsa, creating lasting friendships and memories along the way.
In Tulsa, Gene’s passion for cars led him to work at the VW agency before opening his own Volkswagen repair shop, which he proudly owned and operated for 27 years. A true car enthusiast, Gene had a love for sports cars, Model Ts, and sports car racing. He also enjoyed camping and sharing these adventures with his family.
For many years, Gene took part in the Will Rogers birthday celebration in Claremore each October, where he would drive his Model T in the parade for his friend Randall Reeder, who portrayed Will Rogers. His leadership and work ethic were also evident during his time at War Bonnett Racetrack, where he was entrusted with overseeing the corner workers.
Gene was deeply proud of his role in the Masons, which he joined in 1953. After moving to Tulsa, he served as treasurer for the Catoosa Lodge for several years.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, and their three sons: David, Jon, and Steve. His Siblings Leanna, Fern and Richard and his wife Frida. He was a proud grandfather to sixteen grandchildren and was blessed with many great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind his daughter-in-law Penny, wife of Steve, and the memory of his daughter-in-law Kristi, wife of David, who preceded him in death a year and a half ago after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Irene.
Gene’s life was a testament to dedication, family, and community. His memory will live on in the lives of all who loved him.
