Frankie Jean Childress' Obituary
Frankie “Jean” Childress passed away on December 9, 2022, at the age of 89. Jean was born on November 8, 1933, to Frank and Lovely Oyler. Initially raised on an east Texas farm in Cooper, TX, she was the youngest of six children—three boys and three red-headed girls (a gene that was passed on from their mother’s side, the Flanary’s). The family moved off the farm to Oak Cliff, TX when Jean was 11. She later graduated from Sunset High School and attended one year of college. She began her career at Gardener Denver in Dallas and went on to hold a series of office management positions until she retired in 1997.
In 1955, she married US Marine, Jesse Ray Childress. Jesse and Jean had a wonderful 60 years together prior to Jesse passing away in 2014. The couple raised two children together, a daughter, Lisa Kovacs, and a son, Kevin Childress. Through the years, the family lived in several states, including Texas, Arizona, California, and Oklahoma. When they retired, they moved to Owasso, OK to be near their daughter.
Both Jean and Jesse were raised on Texas farms, and they shared a love of gardening. They built and nurtured lovely flower beds and vegetable gardens everywhere they lived. Jean joined the Owasso Garden Club in 1999, shortly after the group was founded. She held every position in the club over the next 23 years, including Club President, and remained an active member until her passing. In 2008, Jean also completed the OSU Master Gardner program.
At her heart, Jean was an artist who loved to create beautiful crafts of all kinds. She was the first to smile and the last to leave a gathering. Eager to help anyone in need, she was an active volunteer for many organizations over the years. She truly was one of those people who never met a stranger. Her laugh, her smile, and her happy dance will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her children, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her siblings Ellwood Oyler, Mozelle Oyler, Evelyn Gause, Frank Oyler, Jr., and James Earl Oyler.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Owasso Community Resources: https://www.owassohelps.org/donate/.
