George Robert Hawkins, 71, of Tulsa, Oklahoma passed from this life on Monday, January 24, 2022. He was born on February 6, 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to his parents, Charles Quantrell Hawkins and Irma Ruth Orten Hawkins Alexander. Read Obituary
On August 26 1981 the recruits of Platoon 2071 checked in at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. A week later the DI's that would shape these boys into Marines were introduced to us and a life changing journey began. George was our senior DI and he's always been on my mind over the decades. He became an indelible part of our lives and I am forever grateful to him for transforming us over those three months so long ago.

When George was around 3 years old he would wander next door to Aunt Angie’s front door.He would knock, Aunt Angie would answer and George would ask for a cookie.She always had one for him.One day George found his way into Aunt Angie’s flower garden,apparently doing some damage.So,next time George went to the door for a cookie,Angie told him no,he couldn’t have one because of the damage he did to the garden.He looks up at her with his big, teary,brown eyes..George got his cookie.

George and Robert were drill instructures at San Diego, we worked together for two platoon series he was the senor drill instructor. We made a great team together he taught me a lot. I had just bought a new truck and used one time to help transfer some equiptment we needed while going to Camp Pendleton. Through a container on the truck and George pushed it and scratched up the back of the truck. I said a few words and George looked at me and said now you do not have to worry about it. We laugh and went on. George had a lot of compation for the recruits and wanted all to make it through. So as time went on we separated and went on our on ways in the Maine Corps. George was a manager at the Staff Club in 29 palms. I was in 2/7 training out there. While back at the base camp I called Hawkins up and asked if he could get a case of beer so I could share it with the platoon. So he drove out to a location we talked about with the head lights off and I low crawled to get pass the sentries and received the beer. We all had a good time with the beer. George was always so giving of his time and he respected all who new him. He was like a big brother to me. Had great times together.
