As a new assistant athletic director at Union in 2011, Mr. Cloud was so kind in welcoming me to the profession. He was ALWAYS willing to help me, to listen if I ever had a question for him, or to give advice. He loved the profession and wanted what was best for students and athletics. He paved a way for so many of us to follow!

Words fail all of us WRHS Roper alumni when it comes to honoring our beloved classmate and friend Gil Cloud. With his sweetheart Vickie Tull walking the hallowed halls together we knew they were soulmates for life. After celebrating 59 years of marriage in January 2025, we were right. She was the ‘wind beneath his wings’ as he became the legend we know him to be today. His legacy will be the thousands of students fortunate to have called him ‘coach/mentor/big daddy’. His love and support for Will Rogers HS, Union HS, NSU, and TPS Athletics will be realized for generations to come. Beyond sports Gil was a man of faith, loving husband, proud father, loyal friend and defender of the underdog. He was unwavering in promoting fairness and respect while encouraging others to take responsibility in their own pursuit of excellence. He would expect us to continue these endeavors so our young people of today can be better prepared for tomorrow. We Ropers will continue the journey Gil, and love Miss Vickie through this new chapter until she can join you in the ‘Church Triumphant’.🙏
