Dr. Harold Edward Holland's Obituary
Harold Edward Holland, born July 16, 1924, to Edward Mathis and Mina Christine (Gentry) Holland, in Nashville, Tennessee.Dr. Holland passed from this life, May 5, 2015, at the age of 90 years of age. Harold was raised in Nashville, TN. He graduated from Hume Fogg high school in Nashville and studied at both Lipscomb College and Vanderbilt. He later earned a Bachelor’s and Master of Arts degree from Harding College and a second Master’s degree in Library Science and a Doctorate from Columbia University in New York City. Harold and Gerry were married in 1948 and worked as missionaries in Japan from 1950 until 1954. Harold was a part-time minister for the Church of Christ throughout his life and served in the Church as song leader, deacon, and elder. Harold held a number of professional positions in gospel preaching, private industry and education before becoming a professor of Library Science at the University of Missouri-Columba where he taught from 1968 to 1980. He later worked at Pepperdine University where he retired in 1993 after serving for many years as Director of Libraries.Harold was a member of Park Plaza Church of Christ and was an authority on Christian hymns. He was an avid stamp collector, enjoyed classical music, and was a volunteer (and later a client) for Tulsa Visual Services.He will be dearly missed by his family: children: Robert Edward Holland, Kenneth Dale Holland and wife, Ruth Hernandez, Luanne Holland, and John Allen Holland and wife, Gail Snider; grandchildren: Katy, Joe, Christina, Jimmy, David, and Hannah; great-grandchild: Adley; step-grandchildren: Brandy and Dustin; step-great-grandchildren: Mason and Myles; brother: Bob Holland and wife, Edna; sister: Peggy (Holland) Gross and husband, Halton; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. Harold is preceded in death by his parents; and the love of his life, his wife; Gerry Holland, July 7, 2001.Family to receive friends, 4:30 pm ~ 7:00 PM, Friday, May 8, 2015, at the Floral Haven Funeral Home Visitation Room, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. A celebration of life service will be held, 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 9, 2015, at the Park Plaza Church of Christ Chapel, 5925 East 51st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dr. Harold Edward Holland’s name and honor to the Tulsa Visual Services, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
