Hershel Truman Owens' Obituary
Hershel Truman Owens was born on July 10, 1937 in Lovington, New Mexico to Lorrain Thompson and Jewel Owens. He is proceeded in death by his wife Judy Barbieux Owens, his sister Joy Owens, and his grandson Brandon Kelley. He is survived by his five children Jan and Rich Kelley of Rockwall, TX, Sheldon and BJ Owens of Vinita, OK, Bob and Cathy Owens of Pocola, OK, Pamela and Tammy Lance of Owasso, OK, Bill and Judy Owens of Owasso, OK. His grandchildren are Matt Kelley, Justin Owens, Leslie Vest, Bethany Kleinheksel, Mariah Fleetwood, Kaelin Owens, Alyssa Owens, Alex Owens, Caleb Lance, Christian Owens, Haven Hurley, Ashley Smith, and Joseph Smith. Also, his sister Carolyn Butler of Howardwick, TX and his brother Jim and wife Karen Owens of Dumas, TX.Hershel was truly a jolly ‘ole soul and showed it as he played Santa at local schools. He was a volunteer at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum since 2007 accumulating over 2,500 hours. At the young age of 75, he decided to learn how to play an instrument to keep his mind sharp. He began learning to play the dulcimer under the direction and skill of Wendy Songe.Before retirement, Hershel served in the United States Air Force as a radio repairman instructor. His love for aviation took him to Boeing in Wichita, KS and later lead him to McDonnell Douglas Aircraft where he installed aircraft interiors. His entrepreneurial spirit took him to the ownership of a video game resale store here in Tulsa, OK. Within the last 18 months, Hershel fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a HAM radio operator under the call sign W5HTO.He was an exceptional son, brother, friend, husband, and father who loved his family dearly. He will be missed by the many people he encountered over the past 80 years.
