Inia Marie Newman Cherry's Obituary
Inia Marie Newman Cherry was born in Sallisaw/Maple, Oklahoma on July 20th 1932 to Will and Laura Dobbs Newman. She departed this life on January 8th, 2019 in her home, surrounded by her family.She started at her first school in Porter at approximately 7 years old.They moved to Wagoner when she was 9 years old where she attended Blue Mound Country School. When she was 12 or 13 she began attending Union Public schools, where she completed the 10th grade.She married Harold Cherry on September 17, 1949 in a Baptist Church next to the courthouse with her mother and Harold’s mother as their witnesses.Their first house was on the west side of Main Street in Broken Arrow. They would walk across the street to South Mission Church, where she remained a member for the rest of her life, even when she was unable to attend.Their first child, Harold Jr., was born when they lived in a garage apartment by her mother and father in-law. The remaining three children, Tresa, Phyllis, and Keith, were born while they lived in the original house on the property where they built their forever home on the Wagoner/Tulsa County Line.She was all about her family. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.When her health permitted her to do so, she very involved with her church and related activities such as South Mission Willing Workers. She was always the “helper” – she wouldn’t take charge, but she would let you lead the way.She was known for her uncanny ability to fix things from small fans to an ice-maker.She loved to read and listen to her little transistor radio.She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Laura Newman, her husband, Harold Cherry Sr., one daughter, Tresa Faye Cherry, and one sister, Iva Bickerstaff. She is survived by two sons, Harold Cherry Jr. and wife Janet of Skiatook, Keith Cherry of Broken Arrow, one daughter, Phyllis Welch of Inola, 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren as well as twins arriving in August, one brother, Herman and wife Doris of Coweta, one sister, Bytha Elliott of Coweta, as well as a host of other friends and relatives.Visitation is Friday, January 11th from 6:00 to 8:00 pmFuneral Service is Saturday, January 12th at 10:00 amBoth visitation and funeral service will be at:House of Prayer Church 920 S Lynn Lane Tulsa, OK 74108
