James "Jim" Arthur Carpenter's Obituary
James Arthur Carpenter, affectionately known as “Jim”, “Jammer”, and “Diamond Jim”, passed from this life on December 27th, 2024, in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, at the age of 73. He entered the world on January 28th, 1951, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to his parents Wilbur and Gladys Carpenter. He was an only child and only son, which was a legacy that was passed down as he would go only to have an only son, and then his son would go on to have an only son. Jim dedicated his life to serving and uplifting his community and loved his family with all of who he was.
Jim was hired by the Tulsa Fire Department on 3-24-75. He was promoted to Fire Equipment Operator early in his career. He retired as a driver after approximately 25 years of service. Jim retired after 17 years driving for his captain and true friend Robbie Thompson. He was the driver of the Hazmat truck on B platoon at station 4. His dedication to public safety extended beyond his firefighting duties as he shared his knowledge as an adjunct professor for Hazardous Materials at Tulsa Tech for many years, educating and inspiring the next generation of first responders.
While Jim served as a firefighter with the Tulsa Fire Department, his commitment and culinary talents earned him the title of “Best Cook” by his fellow firefighters
Jim loved spending time open wheel dirt track racing. Not only as a driver of Sprint Cars, but as a fan spanning over 50 years. To include but not limited to just racing. He was the promoter for Creek County Speedway for three years. He was the Environmental Coordinator for Emmett Hahn at the Tulsa Chili Bowl for 15 plus years. Jim was able to befriend not only other racers over the years, but also many fans. His numerous friends and fans followed him throughout his life.
Jim's contributions to the community were widely recognized; he was honored twice as “Tulsa Man of the Year” by the Tulsa World. His quick wit, infectious passion for life, and unwavering support for the University of Oklahoma sports teams endeared him to many.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim cherished his time at his cabin by the Illinois River, where he enjoyed relaxing and spending time to himself and with his family. He had a love for cooking, sports, music**, and outdoor activities to only name a few. Jim had many talents, some hidden and some not. For example, he had a great singing voice. He was a quick learner and became skillful at bugle playing. Jim loved to dance and bring smiles and joy to those around him.
In his 60s, Jim continued to embrace life fully, playing pitcher with his children and fostering close relationships with his family. He deeply loved Gavin, Gunner, and Brayden, great nephews in law, and had a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats and dogs. Jim was always known as being quick witted and loved playing jokes on his family. He loved seeing if he could carry on a story without anyone finding out he was joking. He truly was an amazing character and was always the life of the party.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Tammy Carpenter; his daughter Michelle Hammond; his son Jac Carpenter and his wife Lacey; his grandchildren Lawson Carpenter, Madison Garrett, and Patterson Hammond; along with other family members and friends who will forever cherish Jim’s memory.
Jim's legacy of service, love, and community impact will continue to inspire all who knew him. His life was a testament to the profound difference one person can make through dedication and kindness.
