James Lawrence Collins' Obituary
James “Jim” Lawrence Collins, 84, of Sand Springs passed from this life on Friday, December 30, 2022, at St. John’s Ascension Hospital. He was born September 22, 1938, in Tulsa, OK to Leonard Marvin and Galela Mae (Stepp) Collins. He attended various schools growing up and graduated from Sand Springs High School in 1957 where he played football.
He married Judy Collins on December 31, 1968, in Sapulpa, OK, one year after meeting her at the Sunray/DX New Year’s Eve party.
He was in the Air National Guard from 1957 to 1969 and was activated into the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1962 with a final rank of Tech Sergeant specializing in Crash, Fire, and Rescue. He was a member of the American Legion. He attended Tulsa University where he obtained an Associate Degree in Accounting. Jim worked for Sun Oil Company (Sunoco) for over 31 years before retiring in May 1991. His positions included Supervisor of Accounts Receivable/TBA Accounting and Sales Coordinator of Wholesale Fuels. Jim served on the Western Sun Federal Credit Union board from 1978-1989 then again from 2004-2022. Following his retirement from Sunoco, he worked at Industrial Oils Unlimited in the Cost Accounting Department for eight years.
Some of his favorite pastimes included softball, golf, bowling, working in the yard with Judy, traveling, remodeling projects, spending time with grandchildren, and attending grandchildren’s sports and activities.
Jim is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Nancy Collins of Broken Arrow; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and David Harp of Broken Arrow; son and partner, Greg Collins and Melanie Shiew of Sand Springs; grandchildren, Mikelynn Vernon and husband, Shane of Broken Arrow, Jessica Gonzalez and husband, Justin of Tulsa, Sierra Collins of Sallisaw, Jae Collins of Ft Smith, AR, James Collins and fiancé, Delaney Roberts of Sand Springs, Dalton Collins of FL; step-grandchildren, Jentrie Harp and Jacey Harp of Broken Arrow; great-grandchildren, Justin Gonzalez, Jr, Kane Gonzalez, Felix Gonzalez of Tulsa, Charlie Ann Vernon, Kipton Vernon of Broken Arrow, and Ryker Collins of Sallisaw; sister-in-law Cheryl Collins of Owasso; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sabra and Bill Filbert of Emporia, KS.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Collins; parents, Leonard and Galela Collins; and brothers, Bill Collins and Ron Collins.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Floral Haven Funeral Home, 6500 S. 129th East Ave, Broken Arrow, OK.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm on Monday, January 9, 2023, at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel in Broken Arrow with graveside military honors to follow.
