Jim Locke
I come late to this memory page. I met Jim only twice. But, oh, what a great impression he made on me. Immediately, I recognized his intellect and ability to remember very distinct facts and places. Sitting by his pool with his sister, Candy, he was mentally assessing me as to my worthiness to be with her. In the midst of it all I found him most refreshing, acutely funny and most knowledgeable about any topic that came up. He was intriguing and I wanted to learn more.
On our second meeting, he and Candy joined my family for Thanksgiving at the lake. There, I found that he was intellectually "unfiltered" and so funny. A new house had been built across the street with a radical "California Modern" roof line that did not fit well in our neighborhood. Everyone thought the same thing, but were too reserved to mention it. Jim was on the deck enjoying a cigar and wine and as he came into the house, he abruptly announced "Damn, that is an ugly house!!"....we all broke out in uproarious laughter as we totally agreed but only he had the nerve to mention it. I showed him one of my hotrods and began telling him the infamous story about it and he readily knew the people and places that I was about to tell him about....that is when I knew that this guy had been around and was special.
I am saddened that I did not get to sit with him longer, talk to him more and enjoy his stories. I will learn about him through family and friends. The loss is mine.
God Speed, my friend.
