James L Mattingly's Obituary
James L. Mattingly II, lovingly known as "Mad Dog" to his friends and family, passed away on September 22, 2023, in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born on January 21, 1950, to James Mattingly and Davee Anne (Buck) Mattingly and was preceded in death by his parents, his second wife Lynda, and his sister Jan Chance.
James's life was one marked by adventure and service. Born and raised in Tulsa, he embarked on a journey that took him from Iowa to California. He proudly graduated from Pacifica High School in Contra Costa County, California, where he began to shape the values that would define his life.
In 1968, during a tumultuous time in history, James answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He bravely served in Vietnam and afterwards was stationed in various locations, including Ft. Benning, Georgia; Elmendorf Airforce Base, Anchorage, Alaska; Ft. Carson, Colorado and Army Air Force Station Kitzingen, Germany. His time in the military forged a deep sense of duty and honor that would remain with him throughout his life.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, James went on to serve his community as a dedicated mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years. He was an active member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, where he formed lasting friendships with his colleagues and made a positive impact on the lives of those he served.
James was not only a dedicated public servant but also a proud disabled veteran who carried the indomitable spirit of a soldier in his heart. His sacrifices and contributions to his country and community were always met with admiration and respect.
In matters of the heart, James was married twice, first to Judy in 1968, and later to Lynda in 1995. While life brought its share of changes and challenges, his love for his family remained constant.
James had a deep love for the outdoors, finding solace in fishing and enjoying countless family get together and barbeques. He was a skilled bowler and horseshoe player, always up for any friendly competition. His adventurous spirit led him to explore different parts of the world, and he cherished the memories made during his travels.
James was the beloved father of James L. Mattingly III (and his wife, Kary), Stefanie Allen, Annie Misak (and her husband Aaron), Jessie Mattingly, and Billy Mattingly. He was a cherished brother to Jerry, Jon, and Joe. James's legacy lives on through his nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who were the joy of his life.
In addition to his immediate family, James leaves behind a wide circle of relatives and friends who will forever remember his infectious laughter and love for life.
James L. Mattingly, aka "Mad Dog," was a proud veteran and a friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will continue to warm the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy of service and love will be honored for generations to come.
