Janet Kay Norman's Obituary
Janet Kay Norman “Jan” passed away on June 24, 2024, at the age of 78 with her family by her side in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Jan was born in Dayton, Ohio on March 14, 1946, to Standley and Vera Balcomb. She graduated from Greeley Central High School in Greeley, Colorado in 1965, and from Patricia Stevens Career College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1968 with a diploma in fashion merchandising. Jan had various jobs over the years including modeling, delivery driving and volunteering at the hospital; however, her favorite job was working as a wrangler on a ranch in Colorado. After being born in Dayton, Ohio, the family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, then to Denver, Colorado.
In 1959, Janet's father took a job with Miner and Miner Electrical Engineering in West Pakistan. She was 13 years old. On the way there she and her family got to visit Paris for a couple of days, and Beirut Lebanon. While in Pakistan they also visited India and the Taj Mahal. As the family traveled home, they spent 30 days visiting Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Bangkok Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, and Hawaii. Upon returning to the United States the family lived in Greeley, Colorado. In 1965 they moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, then Asheville, North Carolina, and settled in Tulsa Oklahoma. Janet married and moved to Salina Kansas then returned to Tulsa for the remainder of her life. Out of all these beautiful places, Jan loved the mountains of Colorado the most.
In 1975 Jan married Wayne Norman. Though this relationship wasn’t permanent, they were blessed with one child. In 1977 Jan welcomed her son, Ivan Norman, who she loved dearly.
Jan was predeceased by her parents, Standley and Vera Balcomb, her grandparents Kathryn and Carl Beecher Balcomb, Amon and Mary Legg. She is survived by her son, Ivan Norman, brother Philip Balcomb and wife Linda Balcomb, niece Wendy Wiese and husband John Wiese, great nieces Isabella Brunson and Addison Brunson, niece Amy Durham and husband Chris Durham great nephews, Brady Durham, Tristin Durham, Everton Durham and great niece Liviana Durham, sister Deanne Williams and husband Scott Williams, niece Holly Byers and husband Eric Byers, great nieces Alexis Byers and Ashley Byers, niece Amy Harwood and husband Austin Harwood, and niece Carli Williams.
A public visitation will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM, at Floral Haven Funeral Home: 6500 S 129th E Ave, Broken Arrow, OK 74012.
A funeral service to honor the life of Janet will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel, located at 6500 S 129th E Ave, Broken Arrow, OK 74012, with Pastor Greg Pinkston officiating. Interment will follow at 4:00 PM, immediately after conclusion of the chapel service at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens in Veteran's Field of Honor: Phase II.
Jan was diagnosed at a young age with schizoaffective disorder. She and her family have worked to combat the stigma and discrimination around this illness and the family will continue to do so. Jan has been supported by the amazing therapists and staff of OU Impact (Program of Assertive Community Treatment). The family would like to thank all the staff for your love and support over the past 20 years, specifically, Dr. Nicole Washington, therapist Cindy Hickl, Stacy King, Shannon Flynn, Shantana Nelson, Elizabeth Bouch, Ashley Treadway and all the staff.
In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to OU College of Medicine- Impact.
