Janet Viel's Obituary
Janet S. Viel (Mignogna) of Broken Arrow was born July 30, 1953 in New York City, NY to Edward and Dorothy Mignogna (Cimler) and passed into the arms of her Lord in Tulsa on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. Janet grew up in Freeport on Long Island and lived minutes from Jones Beach. Her love of the ocean was evidenced by the 18 cruises she and her husband Ray went on.
Janet met her husband Ray in October 1974 at a mail box in Queens Village, NY and they became instant friends. Ray finally worked up the courage to ask her out in May 1975 and while she said OK she told him she didn’t want to get involved. They had a great time and Ray waited until their 4th date to propose to her. She said yes and they were married on September 6th, 1975. Together they had 2 sons, Raymond and Michael.
Janet was proud to work as a Technical Analyst for American Airlines and its subsidiaries for 37 years. She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Broken Arrow. Janet was a very loving and giving person. She was the team mom for a number of her children’s youth sports. In 1985 she signed up as a Cub Scout Den Leader followed by Boy Scouts. She held many rolls in the Indian Nation Council and served for 20 years and her boys became Eagle Scouts. During this time period Janet spent countless hours fundraising, planning and shopping for Santa’s Sleigh while she was at American.
When it came time to deliver presents to needy families she dressed as Mrs. Clause to work side by side with Santa. For the last 9 years Janet has worked at the Ministry of Compassion through her church where through her great compassion she helped families who were in great need.
Janet’s love for her Country and its Military was worn on her sleeve and she let you know about it. When her boys went into the Air Force Janet found her true calling. She joined the Broken Arrow Blue Star Mothers of America in 2004. She spent 20 years (18 years as President) serving “her boys” shipping tens of thousands of boxes to soldiers overseas and working closely with her beloved Blue Star sisters.
Janet was a powerhouse of love compassion and giving wrapped up with a beautiful smile. A friend put it perfectly today by his definition of her life. She was a Shepherd who protected and guided her flock. A personality that radiated love, laughter and togetherness. An Italian Nonna whose kitchen was as warm and welcoming as her heart.
Janet is survived by her beloved husband Ray of Broken Arrow, her sons Raymond (Lindsey), Broken Arrow, Michael (Hailey) of Crestview, Florida. Her grandchildren, Trey (Tobey), Hayden, Alyssa, Brynn, Hanson and Hudson. She was looking forward to the birth of her 1st great grandchild in March. Janet is also survived by her brother James of Syracuse, NY as well as her cousins, nieces and nephews.
