Jean Ann Haylock's Obituary
In loving memory of Jean Haylock.
Jean Ann (Brandt) Haylock, age 80, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, formerly of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the daughter of Oran and Vergie Brandt on July 6, 1942, in Decorah, Iowa. Jean graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1960. She went on to further her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, until her high school sweetheart Robert “Bob” Louis Haylock proposed. They were married on December 30, 1961, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. They made their home in Iowa City where Bob was getting a degree in civil engineering at The University of Iowa. Jean began working at Mercy Hospital and through the years liked reminding Bob that she “put him through college”!
After Bob graduated from The University of Iowa, they went on to live in Davenport, Iowa, Denison, Iowa, and finally settled in Parkersburg, Iowa, in 1969. Through those years their family grew to include three daughters, Kimberly, Kelly, and Kristin. Jean was a homemaker most of her life and an active participant in everything her three daughters did. She started a Girl Scouts troop, helped with 4H, was an avid crafter and sold her crafts in consignment stores. She had a kiln and made pottery, stained glass projects, got friends together to make crafts and instilled a love of crafting into her family. She also participated in the Women’s Jaycees, women’s golf league, women’s bowling league, couple’s bowling league, and was a very involved mother hosting frequent slumber parties for her daughters.
In her spare time, she enjoyed keeping up with her flower gardens and spending time at their condo and boating in Clear Lake. Jean loved to entertain, was a fantastic cook, and the life of the party. She had many nicknames – hostess with the mostess, Jean, Jean the dancing machine and Jean, Jean the shopping machine. She and Bob loved to travel. They made yearly trips to Chicago for St. Patrick’s Day, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Hawaii, Mexico with friends, sailing the Virgin Islands with her brother John and sister-in-law Mary. They even traveled to Egypt twice to visit their daughter, Kelly, and her family while they were living there.
Jean passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at The Linden in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, parents, and brother, John Brandt.
Jean is survived by her three daughters, Kimberly (Clint) Allan, Kelly (Mick) Harrison, and Kristin Hornbuckle all of Tulsa, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Adrienne – Jean’s birthday buddy – (Zach) Chandler, Garrett Allan, Christopher (Dani Fisk) Harrison, John (Jessica Townsend) Harrison, Madison Harrison, McKenzie Harrison, Parker Harrison, Alex (Jane Evans) Hornbuckle; and sister-in-law, Mary Brandt. She was the great grandma to Archer Harrison and Jane Harrison.
