Joan was born and raised in Charleston, WV, and lived in Florida; New York City; Connecticut; Princeton, New Jersey; and the Outer Banks of North Carolina before finally settling down in Tulsa. She attended West Virginia University and Columbia University, majoring in Journalism. After coming to Tulsa she was employed by ARCO, a major oil company, where she met her second husband, Kay Campbell. Throughout her life, Joan also considered herself a “professional” volunteer, and served a variety of roles for various organizations including Town Clerk of Westport, OK, receptionist at the St. Francis Imaging Center, mobile unit support for Red Cross blood services, and library staff for the Genealogy Department of the Tulsa City County Library. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Questers International, the Pace Society of America, and the Parkview Baptist Church. She loved people and enjoyed talking with anyone, as she believed that is how she learned. She had many interests and hobbies including traveling, gardening, genealogy, wood carving, wood burning, oil painting, playing classical piano, table tennis, and building homes. She also loved animals, especially dogs. She and her husband Kay helped develop a small regional airline called Dawn Air that served as the first commercial air carrier between Norfolk, Virginia and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Joan is survived by her loving son, Roy Lee Ellison III of Broken Arrow, OK. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution, at www.dar.org.The memorial service for Joan W. Campbell will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday morning June 23, 2018 at the chapel on the campus of Oklahoma Methodist Manor, at 4134 E. 31 st Street in Tulsa. To find the chapel (it’s not evident from outside), after going through the entrance to Methodist Manor off of 31st Street, take a hard left and follow a short road that ends in a cul-de-sac between a couple of buildings. At the cul-de-sac, enter the first set of doors that have a portico (covered) that say “Administrative Offices”. Go through the front lobby and the small chapel is hidden inside behind that area. If flowers are sent they request they be received by Friday 6/22.
