Dr. Joanna Midtlyng's Obituary
Dr. Joanna Midtlyng Joanna Midtlyng, beloved teacher and friend to many, died peacefully at her home in Broken Arrow, OK. on April 3, 2012. Joanna was born in Deer Lodge, Montana on October 5, 1927, the daughter of Robert and Lottie Midtlyng. She earned her B.A. from University of Montana , her M.S. from University of Washington , and her P.E.D. from Indiana University. She served as a physical educator and swimming coach in secondary schools prior to her position as Assistant Professor and aquatic coordinator at Illinois State University . At Ball State University in Muncie , IN , she was Professor of physical education, specializing in aquatics. Dr. Midtlyng is the author of two books designed for teachers of swimming. She received many awards for outstanding service as chairman of the National Aquatic Council for AAHPERD. She will be remembered for her dedicated leadership, service, and integrity. After retiring from Ball State , Joanna moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 1995 where she lived until the present. She was known especially for her generosity and kindness in addition to a keen dry wit. Dr. Midtlyng was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa . She also was a member of Broken Arrow Women's Club where she enjoyed playing bridge. Joanna loved horses and at one time owned two American saddlebreds in Indiana . Her interest in horses was the inspiration for her doctoral dissertation which involved a study of stress responses of women in advanced hunt horsemanship. Joanna is survived by her niece Marilyn Mowatt of Sagle , Idaho , her sister-in-law Lorraine Midtlyng of Missoula, MT and her life-time friend and companion Pat Brown of Broken Arrow. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church Tulsa on Saturday, April 7 at 4:00 o'clock. Interment will be in Muncie , Indiana . Floral Haven of Broken Arrow 918-252-2518.
