Joe Ray Phillips' Obituary
Joe Ray Phillips, age 84, passed from this life on May 9th, 2026, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Joe was born on October 3rd, 1941, in Amarillo, Texas, son of Charles A. and Faye (Horne) Phillips. On October 26th, 1963 he married Charlene (Self) and from the very beginning he lived a life marked by hard work, service, and deep devotion to others.
Joe was the proud owner of Builders Supply Inc, where he poured decades of energy into building not only a successful business but also a community. He was deeply involved in his industry, serving through trade associations, mentoring countless individuals, and teaching classes that helped shape the next generation of professionals. Joe believed in doing things the right way, and he shared that belief generously.
Faith was the cornerstone of Joe’s life. He was a charter member of South Tulsa Baptist Church and faithfully served as a deacon, greeter and building committee member. He was also a longtime participant in Bible Study Fellowship. Whether he was welcoming someone at the door or sitting down for a heartfelt conversation about faith, Joe had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and encouraged.
At home, Joe found joy in the simple things—working in the yard, spending time with his family, and being present for the moments that mattered. He coached soccer and cheered for the many sports played by his children and grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to support his family. They were his greatest pride, and he loved them with a steady, unwavering devotion.
He and Charlene also enjoyed vacationing, eating, and game nights with her sisters Sandy and Carol and their husbands Larry and David. Every Sunday night was spent in fellowship with dear friends Bob and Peggy Cossman and Mike and Karen Bright.
Joe is survived by his wife Charlene Phillips; daughters: Shelley Bradshaw and her husband Matthew, Stacey Wheeler and her husband Roger, and Sharla Smith and her husband Scott; grandchildren Mallory Buford and her husband Ryan, Kurtis Wheeler and his wife Britney, Kalley Smith, Kaden Smith, Kolten Smith, and Joshua Bradshaw; and great-grandchildren Brynlie Buford, Gunner Buford, Braelyn Buford, Kaitlyn Wheeler, and Brooklyn Wheeler; along with many close relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Faye Phillips, and his sister, Karla Kay Johnson.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 18th, 2026, at South Tulsa Baptist Church. Joe’s family invites all who knew him to join in honoring a man whose kindness, faith, and generosity touched so many lives.
